With a very heavy heart, I regret having to tell you all, Dustin passed away peacefully in Rebecca’s arms, surrounded by his brother Dillon and his parents at 11:58 AM on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013. He is finally at peace, free from pain and suffering, and rejoicing with our Lord. While we miss him more than words could possibly describe, we know he is now in a much better place and probably running on the beach somewhere in paradise.
Prior to passing, Dustin was in the hospital for almost 6 weeks since his nausea and vomiting were so bad, he had to receive round the clock fluids and medications. A new MRI showed there was new tumor growth in his brain stem and cerebellum. It was affecting his balance, causing the nausea, vision, hearing, etc. For several weeks, Dustin was bedridden and sleeping a good amount of the day. Dustin would always manage to muster enough energy though to read Michael his bed time stories. He was blessed to have friends and family visit him from all over the country. He was also blessed to have the wonderful nurses of 7 South supporting not just him, but helping us all in our time of need. He knew he was loved and his love for God surely never diminished. He enjoyed the beautiful sunsets from the room and would pronounce “God is good.” Luckily, in his last few days, the doctors gave him a new medication, which helped wake him up more and be much more active and enjoy his last moments with friends and family.
On Tuesday, July 30th, Dustin went into cardiac arrest suddenly a little past 9am. They did CPR but he was gone for a good 15 mins. They brought him back and he arrested again on the way to ICU. He came back again and was in critical condition in ICU on a ventilator. That much time out does massive damage to the brain though. It is assumed one of the tumor locations were at fault for the cardiac arrest. As many people as possible came to be by his side. Dustin was slightly responsive though and I believe he heard every word we said. When Rebecca brought Michael in the room to pray with the family, Michael put his hands together and Dustin opened his eyes looking at him. The prayer with the family ended with Michael saying “Amen.” Dustin also squeezed his mom’s hand when asked. Throughout the night though, Dustin’s condition got worse. Dustin finally passed at 11:58 AM on Wednesday surrounded by his loving family and friends. He met God peacefully with a little smile on his face. We miss him more than words could ever say, but we know he is in a much better place now looking over us.
The viewing will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2013 from 6:00PM-8:00PM at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 2935 Kingston Rd. York, PA 17402. The eulogy will be at the end of the viewing. A mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, August 5, 2013 at 10:00AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a short viewing prior to mass. His final resting will be at Mt. Rose Cemetery York, PA immediately following the service. All are welcome to attend a very special commemorative jog that will take place at the cemetery to complete Dustin’s journey for those who wish to participate. Bring your sneakers (don’t worry, I promise it’s a short jog!) A reception will follow back at St. Joseph Church in the school cafeteria where Dustin went to elementary school. Carpooling to the cemetery is encouraged, as we will be returning to St. Joseph’s for the reception.
Dustin will be laid to rest next to a road he and Rebecca both used to do practice runs during their high school cross country years when they first met and began dating. Coincidentally it also happens to be at the top of one of the highest points in York with the best view of the sunset. Dustin will continue to watch over us all.
We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from all of you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are so blessed.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
